Our camps are explorative adventures into the natural world, practicing naturalist skills and bushcraft. Nestled in the coastal hills north of Campbell River is Stella Lake - a beautiful freshwater lake within a short hike of the rocky shores of the Johnstone Strait. This dynamic biome between the Stella watershed and the sea will be the zone of our explorations, inquiries, harvests and adventures this spring break.
Our 2-night camp will explore some essential skills and experiences of an oldtime spring bush camp. Fianna students will set a canvas wall tent in the traditional way, cutting and preparing wooden lodgepoles, and weaving a floor of conifer boughs to create a cosy space, heated by a wood stove, to form the hearth and heart of our bush camp.
Cosy from the chill of the spring evenings, Fianna instructors Kes and Matt will share stories of bush knowledge from their own experience and from traditional cultures they have lived and studied with. We will collectively sink into an inquiry of what it's like to depend on old knowledge, and the mysteries of the land, at this time of year.
Day 2 will involve a harvesting adventure bushwhacking to the sea, to see what we can forage along the way for food, medicine and materials for processing and crafting on Day 3.
This camp is for youth who love the outdoors and are excited to take their nature-based skills to the next level.
Personal camping gear is required (tent, sleeping bag, mat etc.) - the wall tent is strictly a gathering and warming space, not a sleeping space.
Cooked breakfasts and dinners are provided, campers bring their own lunches and snacks.
